Why do you need to wear makeup when you go on TV?

You aren’t trying to look like a Hollywood Hunk or Glamour Queen, right?

Unfortunately, you need makeup just to look like you. The bright lights (photo of studio lights) in the studio or on top of the camera will distort your features. What looks like a close shave in person will look like a five o’clock shadow on TV, even if it’s only 9:00AM. Clear, normal skin in person, will look splotchy, waxy and plastic on TV—if you don’t wear makeup. Dark circles under the eyes become more prominent without makeup, but are easily minimized with just a light touch of powder and foundation.  Freckles and shaving nicks that are barely noticeable in person become much more noticeable on TV but again with a little makeup, these imperfections fade away.

(without makeup)
- face looks slightly washed out
- visible 5 o'clock shadow
- some shine from lights

(wearing makeup)
- less 5 o'clock shadow
- less shine
- a more natural appearance

TV lights do several unflattering things to people who aren’t wearing makeup. The heat of the lights will make you sweat, even if you don’t normally perspire. That sweat will make you look shiny and oily—not a flattering look. Additionally, the pressure of appearing on TV makes most people more nervous than usual, resulting in more perspiration.

The answer is Makeup.

You need to wear makeup, not to change your looks, but to keep yourself from having your looks altered beyond recognition. The good news is you don’t have to hire an elaborate, expensive team of makeup artists. All you really need is a little powder and some foundation. There is no magic brand or style of makeup you need to solve your problems. You simply need to find makeup that is the same color as your skin. It is very important that the makeup color is not darker or lighter than your own skin. If you get the color wrong, it will contrast starkly and make you look silly on TV.

The beauty of TJ’s TV Makeup is that it’s designed to blend.  Unlike the compact your wife might have in her purse, TJ’s TV Makeup combines a multitude of colors to create a perfect blend on almost every skin tone.  This means you don’t need a “winter” compact and a “summer” compact.  It means you don’t have to go to the mall or the drug store and test colors.  It means you will look your best on TV… without any worrys.

Doesn’t the TV station have a makeup person?

If you care about your own image you can never depend on anyone else to take care of your makeup. I have been in small town TV stations with rundown equipment, and they gave me a great professional makeup application. And then I have been at the NBC Headquarters on 30 Rockefeller Plaza in New York City appearing on national TV and was not provided any makeup.

So did I go without?

No, I simply pulled out my makeup case and applied it to my face in about two minutes. It wasn’t quite as good as what Dan Rather receives each night, but it got the job done.

What else can I do to look great on TV?

Here are some simple things to remember before your next TV appearance so that you look your best.

  1. Don't wear a white shirt - white is too bright on the screen.
  2. Don't wear bright red - red is a "hot" color and can trail on camera.
  3. Don't wear a solid black suite - your arms and body can all blend together.
  4. Don't wear a striped tie, or one with small, intricate details - these can distract your audience.
  5. Sit forward in your seat and lean towards the camera.

How to apply makeup?

Never put makeup on before. Don't worry, it's simple - and it only takes a couple of minutes! Watch TJ Walker, world renouned media trainer, show you how to apply makeup and look your best on camera in this short instructional video.

What is in the kit?

Blending Makeup Compact
Our kit includes a "mosaic" powder makeup that is unique because it automatically matches almost everyone's natural skin tones. A powder makeup is applied over a liquid foundation and to the rest of the face area to reduce shine and smooth the skin. It hides small blemishes and imperfections plus reduces the appearance of perspiration.

Applicator Brush
A brush makes application simple and allows anyone to professionally smooth and blend their makeup.

Liquid Foundation
When powder isn't enough! This concealer covers imperfections of the skin such as dark circles under your eyes or spider veins in your cheeks.

Lip Balm
A small afterthought for most, but a necessity when going on television.

People get nervous when going on TV, and a natural part of getting nervous is getting a "dry mouth". What happens when you mouth is dry, your tongue darts out and licks your lips. Trust me, licking you lips in never a good image on TV. It sounds simple but applying lip balm before going on air helps reduce the natural urge to lick you lips on camera.

Our lip balm is a clear, non-gloss balm, with vitamum E and a slight vanilla scent.

TJ's VoiceSave
If lip balm is used to help dry lips and stop that darting tongue, TJ's VoiceSave works at the root of the problem. It works as a lubricant and apply moisture directly to the vocal cords and throat.

It won't stop dry mouth (although it helps) but it does stop you from loosing your voice!
